About the Winter School  (see images)

mantownhuman hosted Critical Subjects, Architecture & Design Winter School on 17-18 November at The Kowalsky Gallery, Great Sutton Street, London EC1.

Critical Subjects was a unique opportunity for 26 of the keenest students in the country (representing 22 universities) to engage in a series of intellectual architectural design challenges facilitated by leading names in the field. Effectively a group of architecture students from across the UK were held in a windowless, airless basement for 24 hours of relentless hard work... and seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Over the course of a day and a half, we explored topics such visionary architecture, social criticism, historical-thinking and provided an open dialogue on classic texts and film, as well as sessions on the art of design and the role of expertise.

The day began with a short introduction where the students got to know each other, followed by debates and
discussions culminating with a live project brief announced at 21:00pm. This design project had to be completed by 08:30 the following morning. Here, the students were required to defend - rather than justify - their work using the armoury of argumentative styles and ideas garnered over the previous 24 hours.

The results and testimonials from the mantownhuman Architecture & Design Winter School are as follows:

Design Prize:
Mary Denman (1st year) and Francis Field (3rd year) for their Rapid Prototyping Floating House Dispenser

Merit Prizes:
Rowan Morrice (Robert Gordon, Aberdeen) wins a European trip to write an article for Blueprint magazine;
Runners up: Andrew Ng (Dundee); Josh Broomer (Mackintosh/Glasgow); Simhika Rao (Edinburgh) and Sarah Shuttleworth (Newcastle)

However, the standard and quality of participation - by everyone - was consistently excellent. Each student deserves high praise and we are very grateful to each and every one of the participants (see Brochure for a full list of names).

mantownhuman's Winter School ambition was to present students with ideas, not mere skills.
